A few months ago, I watched a podcast from Together Wheel Talk, and it centred around prostate cancer. On the show were a couple of guests – two from Together We Ride (TWR) and Kevin, Black Health Equity Engagement Manager at Prostate Cancer UK. His message was powerful and deeply informative.
The conversation that sparked from this topic resonated with my core, as I’ve always been about helping to promote health and well-being. After hearing Kevin speak, I reached out and said I would do anything I could to help amplify this message – because it should be shouted loudly.
Our mission has always been about more than cycling – it’s about community, health, and looking after each other both on and off the bike. That’s why we’re proud to stand alongside Prostate Cancer UK in raising awareness about an issue that deeply affects our community: prostate cancer in Black men.
Black men face a 1 in 4 risk of developing prostate cancer in their lifetime – double the risk faced by other men. Not only are Black men more likely to be diagnosed, but too often the disease is picked up at a later stage, making treatment and outcomes more difficult.
“Thank you, TWR, for allowing us to join with you to amplify our message that Black men are at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer. Our mission is to give every man the knowledge and power to navigate this complex disease. We raise awareness of risk, fund groundbreaking research, and provide trusted support for men and their families.
Black men face a significantly higher risk and are often diagnosed later, so advancing Black Health Equity is central to our work. Through community engagement, partnerships, and targeted awareness initiatives, we’re tackling inequalities, improving access to services, and striving for better outcomes for all men.”
The reality is that prostate cancer often develops silently, with no obvious symptoms in its early stages. That’s why early detection is critical:
👉🏾 If you’re a Black man over 45, it’s important to have a conversation with your GP about your risk and whether a PSA test is right for you.
✅ Age 45+ – Higher risk as you get older✅ Family history – Father or brother with prostate cancer increases your risk✅ Black heritage – 1 in 4 Black men will be diagnosed in their lifetime
Don’t wait for symptoms. Early detection saves lives.
