The first weekend of March signalled the official start of our spring cycling season, and what a way to begin! On the crisp morning of March 2nd, we gathered at Windrush Square in Brixton, ready to embark on an adventure to one of Surrey’s most legendary cycling destinations—Box Hill. 

The Turnout: A Community on Wheels 

We were thrilled to see around 19 cyclists join the ride, ranging from seasoned riders to those dusting off their bikes after the winter break. The excitement was palpable as everyone exchanged greetings, adjusted their gear, and prepped for the journey ahead. Leading the charge, our experienced ride leaders ensured a smooth and enjoyable experience for all: AJ guided the first group, while Fitzroy and Maryanne expertly navigated the second. 

The Ride: Scenic Routes and Steady Climbs

As we rolled out of Brixton, the initial chill in the air was quickly forgotten, replaced by the steady rhythm of wheels turning and the hum of cheerful conversation. The route to Box Hill is a blend of urban roads, rolling countryside, and a few testing climbs—perfect for shaking off any lingering winter rust. 

The real test came with the famous Zig Zag Road ascent, a climb that has challenged and inspired cyclists for generations. With each switchback, the breathtaking scenery of the Surrey Hills unfolded around us, making every ounce of effort worthwhile. Just as we reached the summit, the clouds parted, and the sunbathed the hilltop in a warm glow—an unforgettable moment that reminded us why we love these rides. 

More Than Just a Ride: The Joy of Cycling Together 

This season opener was more than just a test of endurance; it was a celebration of community, resilience, and the simple joy of cycling. Laughter echoed along the route, words of encouragement were exchanged, and friendships were strengthened on two wheels. Whether it was the thrill of the descent, the satisfaction of conquering the climb, or the shared coffee break at the top, everyone left with a sense of achievement and excitement for the season ahead.
