Westminster, West Wickham, Warlingham, and Wimbledon
There’s something truly special about traditions, and for TWR, the annual “4 Ws” ride is a staple in our community calendar. Westminster, West Wickham, Warlingham, and Wimbledon—this iconic route encapsulates the camaraderie, challenge, and spirit of cycling that defines us as a group. Spanning approximately 51 miles and featuring a climbing elevation of 1,750 feet, the 4 Ws ride is no leisurely Sunday spin but rather an adventure packed with both grit and joy. This year’s ride held extra significance as it served as the perfect warm-up before tackling the British Heart Foundation’s London to Brighton ride on June 15th.
Setting Off: Gearing Up for the Challenge
As always, the day began with a meeting of like-minded individuals, gathering together with a shared purpose and a lot of laughter. The sense of community was palpable as we prepped for the ride, fine-tuning our gear and fueling up for the hills that lay ahead. For some in the group, veterans of the route, this ride presented an opportunity to set new personal records on the climbs. For others, it was uncharted territory, a first attempt at conquering the famous 4 Ws. Regardless of experience, every single rider was ready to give it their all.
The ride started with high spirits as we rolled through Westminster. It’s always a thrill to cycle through the heart of London, where iconic sights serve as the backdrop to the start of our journey. From there, we headed south, and it wasn’t long before the urban landscape gave way to the rolling hills and greenery of Kent.
The Hills of Kent: Testing Limits and Building Strength
Don’t be deceived by the relatively modest mileage of the 4 Ws route—this ride is no easy feat. The hills of Kent have a reputation, and they live up to it. Short but sharp, these climbs demand focus, determination, and a good dose of resilience. The group took on the challenge with characteristic enthusiasm, pushing through burning legs and pounding hearts.
For the experienced climbers in the group, it was a chance to finesse their technique and chase personal bests. The steeper sections became arenas for grit and glory. For newer riders, the hills were a different kind of triumph—a test of courage and an opportunity to see just how far they’ve come since picking up cycling. Many in the group only started cycling in the last five years, and the progress they’ve made is nothing short of inspiring. It’s a reminder that every ride is a step forward, and every challenge overcome is a victory worth celebrating.
Community Spirit: The Heart of TWR
What sets this ride apart isn’t just the route or the climbs—it’s the people. The 4 Ws is more than a cycling challenge; it’s a celebration of what we’ve built together as a community. From encouraging shouts on the hills to shared snacks at pit stops, the camaraderie is what keeps us coming back year after year. It’s a chance to look back and appreciate how far we’ve come, both individually and as a group.
This year’s ride was no exception. Watching riders of all levels come together to tackle the route was a testament to the inclusivity and support that define TWR. Whether it was a seasoned cyclist offering tips to someone taking on their first climb or the collective cheer as we conquered each section of the ride, the spirit of teamwork was alive and well.
Looking Ahead: London to Brighton
Completing the 4 Ws ride felt like more than just a personal accomplishment—it was the perfect lead-up to the British Heart Foundation’s London to Brighton ride just days away. With the miles in our legs and the hills under our belts, we feel ready and excited to take on this next challenge, knowing that we’ll be riding not just for ourselves but for a cause that truly matters.
For now, we’ll take a moment to reflect on the incredible day we shared. The 4 Ws ride reminded us of the power of perseverance, the joy of cycling, and the strength of community. Here’s to many more rides, challenges, and memories to come. As we like to say, onward and upward—both on the bike and in life. Cheers to TWR and the journey ahead!
